Cricket and rugby might seem to belong to two different worlds, but Kent Cricket and Canterbury RFC do share one thing, or more precisely one person.
New Zealand born CRFC flanker and Strength and Conditioning coach at Kent County Cricket Pete Kelly admits the difference in training when it comes to fitness is easy to notice.
He said: “In rugby you want to get bigger, faster and stronger while in cricket the skill element is much larger.
“There is quite a big difference between training in rugby and cricket but cricket players are much fitter than people would think.”
Having gained precious experience with the Otago Highlanders back home, he was appointed earlier this year and decided to keep the position rather than moving away following the City club relegation from National League 2 last May.
After a brilliant personal season where he scored 29 tries, the flanker had the opportunity to leave Canterbury and play for another club at higher level but decided to put his long term future ahead of his short term personal ambitions and stay in Canterbury.
He added: “I had a few offers around England and Ireland where I used to play but even though they were tempting I thought the future and work outside rugby were more important at this stage of my life.”
