King’s School ready to expand Recreation Centre

by Nicolas Verdier

Plans to buy and renovate the Malthouse off St Stepen’s Road, Canterbury, have been put forward by King’s School, after a deal to seel was agreed by car dealership giant Barretts .

The building, which is only two streets away from the existing Recreation Centre, is used as the Service and Parts department of all seven garages in and around Canterbury.

Owner and Managing Director Paul Barrett said he was happy about the deal.

He said: “We are at a very early stage in the process as of now but the sale of the Malthouse to King’s School has been agreed.

“The building is far too old and big for us and we are not prepared to pay the cost of the renovation.

“We have other buildings in and around the city so we will relocated our parts storeroom.

On the other side of the transaction, Nathalie Evans, Manager at King’s School Recreation Centre said the transaction and the expansion would hugely benefit the pupils.

“If the planning permission is accepted by the council, the building will be a great new asset for the pupil regarding extra-curricular activities.

“From the plans showed to the public and the staff last week, a theatre will be built in the Malthouse as well as a sports hall and accommodations for the staff.

If accepted, work is set to start in June next year.
