Canterbury
Cathedral’s gates have been removed for a clean up.
For
over 350 years, the solid oak gates have endured weather and vehicle damage that
has taken its toll on the woodwork. On October 11, the gates which weigh nearly a
ton each, were taken from their hinges by the Canterbury-based company Artful
Logistics.
It
is hoped that the renovation will preserve the gate to be enjoyed by future
generations, and will guarantee that they fit in with the rest of the
multi-million pound cathedral restoration.
Sheena
Daly press and public relations officer at the Cathedral said: “The doors are
historically important, they’re the main public entrance to the cathedral and
precincts, and if we left them they would literally just fall apart. Its really
important we carry out this conservation work.”
For
the meantime, the gates which should be fully restored within three to four
months, are being replaced by temporary gates with a full-scale image of the
original.
